In a surprising move, Canon released a new macro lens with the same focal length as the popular consumer-grade Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro but sporting an L badge and an all-new Hybrid Image Stabilization system. Realizing that many photographers hand-hold their cameras when shooting macro, especially with a medium telephoto lens, the original EF 100mm f/2.8 lacks image stabilization compared to its Nikon counterpart, the Nikon 105mm f/2.8G AF-S VR.
