In a surprising move, the Canon EOS 7D digital SLR was officially announced today (Sept 1). The camera is meant to be a replacement for the 40D and the rather lack-luster 50D released October of last year but instead of the usual Canon small incrementa upgrade, Canon seemed to have designed the 7D from the ground up.

The list of new features include:
- 18 MP APS–C CMOS Sensor
- 8 fps image capture
- ISO Range
- EOS Movie
- Dual “DIGIC 4” processors
- Body Re-Design
- 100% Viewfinder with 1.0x magnification and built in LCD overlay
- Wireless flash control
That's a whopping list of improvements for the xxD series.
Now speaking of model numbers, many forum discussions are wondering why Canon opted to call the camera a 7D instead of ramping up the xxD line and calling it a 60D. Traditionally, the xD series (single number) of Canon signifies the higher-end market of the EOS line, with lower numbers indicating higher end of the product line. In the digital EOS segment, the single-digit models are either full-frame (5D series) or the professional 1D series, it's surprising that an APS-C, mid-level camera now sports a single digit as well.
Which leads to my questions, will Canon revamp its whole product line? There's really not much wiggle room between the 50D and the new 7D to release an in-between product anymore. Is the 50D the last of the xxD series? What about a cheaper full-frame digital EOS in the future? What will the lower-than-5D-camera model be called, if ever there will be one? Continue Reading

Just like the Nikon post that I had a few days ago, here's to help you decide which Canon dSLR and lens to buy.
To compare Canon EOS dSLR bodies, visit the Canon Resource and Learning link. Or the Camera Advisor page.
For the Canon EF Lens Work III book that lists all the current EF lens catalog and their MTF charts, download the whole document here (32MB). (Please host the PDF for redistribution if you have a self-hosted site to save bandwidth). The files were merged from 11 separate PDFs freely distributed by Canon.

Many might think that this is a Canon-centric site, it's not, it just happens that I use a Canon personally, and I don't get a lot of Nikon loaners.
In any case, if you're confused on what Nikon to buy (or buy next), Nikon published a wonderful document for your comparison and reference. I found this from a friend's website, if you're in the Philippines, get your Nikon from Jerry Tieng.
Download the Nikon DSLR Comparison PDF.

Hope you find the document useful.
Oh, if you are a Canon user, you might want to read "Which Canon to Buy?", instead.

I've collected some worthwhile reviews of the highest resolution DSLR in the market right now, the Sony Alpha A900, hope you find them useful.
